Unifiber booms

Unifiber has managed to do something extrodinary that we expect to set a new direction regarding the perception of the boom as a component of the whole rig.

If we domesticate and simplify only the definition of the boom, we could say that the boom consists of three parts - the head, the body and the tail. We know carbon and aluminum booms, which differ in weight, hardness and, of course, price. Today we won’t talk about these differences.

Unifiber has been working intensively for some time on the project of the concept of the new boom, which hit the market in April 2020. A large part of the series of booms 2020, on which they will bet in the future, is t. i. modular boom system.

Many windsurfers have already encountered the boom loosening without any sudden hit to the boom. The boom is usually loosened at the head which is made of plastic (very high quality and hard). It transmits the greatest forces that pass from the sail and mast to the boom and arms and vice versa. Over time, the plastic also loses on that strength and consequently our boom dances while driving. Many of you are resourceful and in some cases you can solve this problem with epoxy, carbon, electric drill, metal reinforcements and similar solutions. However, these are only short-term solutions, so we do not advise you to go to extreme situations and wind with this boom. Many of you have already experienced a catapult into a sail, and many have twisted the body of the boom. In many cases, unfortunately, at the expense of a loose head or twisted body, it is necessary to replace the entire boom, which is an unnecessary cost, as only one part is damaged.

Unifiber, therefore developed a special modular system by which the boom was divided into three parts: head, body (tube) and tail. Now you have already guessed that you can only replace the head, body or tail.

In addition to being able to replace only part of the boom, all parts are compatible with each other. This means that you can have the same head and body (tubes) and, in addition to the regular tail, buy a wide tail, which you use for "freeride" or slalom sails with a deeper profile. Or you have only one head and tail and two boom bodies and thus have covered three lengths of ordinary booms.

In general, this means that you can halve the space you need to store all the booms, as well as the cost that would be incurred by buying a new boom, as you only buy the part you need to increase the range.

Probably many of you are now wondering what such modular system means for the stiffness of the boom itself? The modular head system is really well studied and tested. This system is even stiffer and more compact than the one on the regular booms. This is possible due to the two additional "implants" that come with it and can be installed if necessary to increase the stiffness. It takes about a minute and the key provided to replace the head (if you also use additional reinforcements). However, if you do not use reinforcement, you can replace the boom head without using a tool in few seconds.

4 steps to replace the boom head                                                         Metal inserts to increase head's stiffness

The boom head is made to fit perfectly on both SDM and RDM masts – you get special adapters to fit both types of mast.

Unifiber has four different series of booms, separated within two classes:

1.) The aluminium class includes the following series:

a) "Essentials"

For those who are looking for standard quality and want to get the most for the least money. Boom lengths: 110, 140, 160, 180 and 200 cm. Tail lengths 40 and 50 cm.

Essentials alu boom normal tail                                                                                         Essentials boom wide tail

b) "Heavy Duty"

For more demanding users looking for extra performance and durability. Boom lengths: 140, 160, 180 and 200 cm. The length of the tail is 50 cm. All booms are also available with a V-grip tube (V-shaped tube), where the boom is a little harder and harder to bend due to the statics of the tube.

Alu HD boom                                                                                           Alu HD V-grip boom

2.) The carbon class includes the following series:

a) "Heavy Duty"

For demanding users who are looking for an even greater level of performance and durability offered by HD aluminium booms. Boom length: 140, 160, 170 and 190 cm. Tail length: 50, 60 and 80 cm. Carbon HD booms are also one of the most affordable (if not the most affordable) on the market!

Carbon HD wide tail                                                                                         Carbon HD outside wide tail

b) "Elite"

The highest quality materials on the market allow you the lowest possible weight of the boom itself, the highest stiffness and performance. Boom length: 140, 160, 170 and 190 cm. Tail length: 50, 60 and 80 cm.

Elite carbon slim boom                                                                                                  Elite carbon wide tail boom

When combining head, body and tail, you are limited to the choice of aluminium and carbon series, but you can still use the body of the Essentials series boom and the tail of the Heavy Duty aluminium boom within the aluminium class. Or, within the carbon class, you combine the body of the Elite series with the tail of the HD carbon series or vice versa.

Nevertheless, there are certain limitations within individual combinations, which is why we recommend that you contact us with questions!

What do we expect from these booms? At Recharge, we expect that boom market will shake up a lot due to this new Unifiber’s concept "Assemble me!". From a purely economic point of view, the users will profit much more than the manufacturers. In addition, the environment will also suffer much less, as it will not be necessary to discard the entire boom due to one non-functioning part. We are of the opinion that this is a great product that is completely comparable in price to other booms, but offers you much more freedom in finding the optimal boom for you. The new system of attaching the head to the boom basically means greater stiffness and more precise installation of the boom on the mast, which will make the ride itself more responsive and easier. You save a lot of money in both the short and long term, as you can cover all sail sizes with fewer booms, from the smallest "wave" sails to large slalom sails. At the same time, if a certain part of the boom fails, you replace only that part, not the whole boom, and thus save again. They convinced us! What about you?
