Patrik boards

Patrik Diethelm is a name that is well established in the world of windsurf and has been synonymous with good board shapes for two decades. Patrik, as Chief Designer for F2, has invented some of the most established board shapes and is setting long-standing standards also for other brands.

Patrik founded his board brand in 2010 and named it simply Patrik. In recent years, Patrik has finally established himself as one of top brands and continues to set standards in windsurfing boards. Customer trust, top World Cup and great reviews are just some of the reasons why more and more windsurfers (not only professionals but also average users) are trusting Patrik.

Although all boards and brands are now so sophisticated that there are almost no bad models, Patrik is slightly different from the competition.

Patrik differs from the competition in two very important features:

  • The shapes of the boards are slightly different from the competition: virtually all brands have been following the trend of shortening boards and increasing the width of the board for more than a decade. Of course, this is not only a fashion fly, but boards with shortening and increasing width gain manoeuvrability and quicker glide. These trends are largely dictated by the competitors – wider slalom boards glide faster, while wider freestyle board are important for manoeuvrability and better completion of freestyle tricks. Current freestyle tricks were over a decade ago impossible to complete on the “spears”. Even for amateur users, the freestyle is becoming more attractive and affordable with cheap airline tickets to convenient locations. New shapes of boards are, to some extent, more manoeuvrable and faster to glide. However, only to a certain extent, because otherwise we achieve the opposite effect. Patrik follows the guide to produce a bit longer and narrower boards than competitors. Boards are more stable and over better driving experience. Slightly longer and narrower boards hold the direction better, are more stable at turns and windsurfer can put less strain on the board. As a result, the ride is more stable, faster and easier, which ultimately nullifies the benefits of having shorter and wider boards.
  • Ratio Carbon-Price: Carbon plays an important role in all sports products where durability, low weight and strength are important. Just as the automotive and aerospace industries can no longer be imagined without carbon, so is windsurfing. The design of the boards is all about the ratio of carbon and fiberglass (and other negligible ingredients). The more (layers) of carbon the board has, the better it tolerates all the forces acting on the board while windsurfing. The higher the carbon ratio in comparison to other materials is, the lighter and faster the board is. Consequently, the board is easier to control on the water itself. Carbon is also a very expensive material for the manufacturers they are very economical in use of carbon. It is definitely one of the more difficult things for a windsurfer to take a rest on the beach too soon because of a broken board. Patrik is using higher amounts of carbon than their competitors, but at the final price they are quite comparable to other top brands. For the same amount of money you get a lighter, faster and more agile board!

The strength-to-weight ratio of the Patrik boards is way better compared to other manufacturers. Adding to that the final price and driving characteristics of Patrik boards, you've already got the answer to your question "why Patrik?"

Patrik is also a bit special with his approach and open-mindedness about the technologies, materials and processes used to make the board itself. Those of you who took a few minutes to browse through their web site have often said to us that each model is all so accurately presented that you no longer have any questions.

Increasingly, we have noticed that those who opt for Patrik are just coming back next year or so for a new Patrik or just expanding your fleet of Patrik boards.

If you are deciding to buy a board or just play with this though, the most important question is how and why is the specific Patrik board (or some other board of other manufacturer) better / worse than the competition? Which board is the correct one depends a lot of our preferences, the style of driving and the pure fact that to some of you, Patrik board fits perfectly on the feet and to some don’t. Only on a board where you will feel comfortable and relaxed will you be able to upgrade your skills and enjoy the ride as much as possible.
